Genre Research: Birdbox
What elements of the genre that you chose to base your final task on does this movie have?
An element we'll be using in our final task is intense music. We want to create a lot of suspense in our movie. So when the girl receives the texts/letters, we'll use intense music. We'll also be using the element normality. The girl is going to pretend nothing is wrong during the task. The other girls won't know anything's wrong, so they'll also be acting normal.
What elements of the genre did the movie have that you like?
Intensity: At the beginning of the movie, Sandra is explaining to the kids that they must remain silent and alert. As she explains, the audience gets an intense feeling.
Intense music/ sound motifs: After the beginning scene, there's intense music and the sound of the creature playing. This keeps the audience on their toes because it feels as if something is about to happen.
Normality: While Sandra and the kids are on the water, the scene switches to the past at Sandra's home. Sandra and her sister are doing normal things like painting and bickering about sister things. Sandra even goes to a doctors appointment for her pregnancy. This then leads to the signs of the creature appearing.
Suspense: Uses a lot of suspense to show how unknowing the characters are about what the creatures is and how to survive. The main way this is done is through sound. The intense music and background noises, like leaves moving, creates suspense and gets the audiences' blood pumping. They also do this through the characters not knowing anything about the creature. Since the characters don't know anything about the creature, neither does the audience. So, the audience is kept on their toes in attempt to figure it out.
What elements of the genre did the movie have that do not appeal to you?
Switching between time periods: Goes between the present and the future. I don't find this appealing because it's a little confusing to the audience on which period is which.
